Mask Associated Dry Eyes

What is dry eye? Dry Eye is a disease of the ocular surface triggered by different causes.

Wearing a mask has become routine since The World Health Organization adopted this measure to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Recent research has observed a corresponding increase in ocular irritation and dryness among regular mask users (Moshirfar, West, and Marx 2020). This condition has been called “MASK-ASSOCIATED DRY EYE” or MADE.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND WHO IS PRONE TO SUFFER FROM MASK-ASSOCIATED DRY EYE?

The increased flow of air escaping through the mask likely accelerates the evaporation of the tear film which, when continued for hours or days, can lead to irritation or inflammation of the ocular surface.

Those wearing a mask for very long periods of time may be more likely to experience symptoms.

WHICH ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Evidence suggests that dry eye has an adverse effect on overall quality of life which can affect vision and mental health. Some of the most common symptoms are;

-        Ocular irritation            -    Discomfort                -     Blurred Vision             -     Watery eyes            -     Redness

It is important to be seen by your optometrist in order to rule out more serious conditions.

TIPS TO PREVENT MASK-ASSOCIATED DRY EYE

1. Ensure your mask fits properly: This will prevent the air escaping from the top of your mask.

2. Avoid dry environments and limit your screen time.

3. Maintain good eyelid/ eyelash hygiene: Good hygiene will help to maintain a healthy ocular surface. Our optometrists can recommend appropriate products to maintain your eye health.

4. Make an appointment with one of our optometrists: Our optometrists can recommend the best treatment depending on the grade of dry eye and will rule out other conditions.
